How the check digit (position 9) works
Each character becomes a number (digits keep their value; letters use the fixed table A=1, B=2 … H=8, J=1 … R=9, S=2 … Z=9), is multiplied by its position weight (8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 10, 0, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2), and the products are added. The remainder after dividing by 11 is the check digit; a remainder of 10 is written as X. A VIN whose position 9 does not match was mistyped or altered.
Worked example with an illustrative VIN 2C4RDGCG0RA123456 (a common Dodge prefix with a made-up serial — not a real vehicle): the products add up to 385; 385 ÷ 11 leaves 0, so the check digit is 0.
| Position | Character | Value | Weight | Product |

Frequently asked questions
What does a Dodge VIN start with?
The first three characters are the World Manufacturer Identifier. On Dodge VINs in NHTSA complaint records the most common are 2C4 (1,294 VINs), 1C4 (897 VINs) and 2C3 (450 VINs).
How do I tell the model year from a Dodge VIN?
Read position 10: F = 2015, G = 2016, K = 2019, L = 2020, M = 2021, N = 2022 and R = 2024. The same letters repeat every 30 years.
